What is an Air Handler?

Living in Florida can prove to be difficult when it comes to the blistering summer months. Not only can the hot sun provide above 100 degree temperatures, but the humidity can also be extremely oppressive. Having the right HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) equipment in your home will make your life a whole lot easier. A vital part to any heating and cooling system is the Air Handler. Known as the “blower” element of your HVAC system, the Air Handler is responsible for forcing generated cold air throughout your house via ductwork.

Air Handler Components

An Air Handler moves air through your home using multiple components. These essential parts all work together to provide you with the comfort you need to keep your house at a desired temperature throughout the harshest of conditions that occur in Florida. Besides electrical components that are needed to run every Air Handler efficiently, the main elements included are:

Blower Motor – This component is responsible for sending conditioned air from your HVAC system into your home. After your system cools the air, the blower motor pushes it through the duct system and out of your vents that are designed to cool down the rooms in your house. If you are experiencing strange smells or unusual sounds coming from your vents, it is likely a blower motor issue. Weak air flow can also be a telltale sign that there may be an issue with your blower motor. Be sure to contact a professional service provider like Comfort Caddies if you notice any of these problems.

Evaporator Coil – Located inside the Air Handler or attached to the furnace is the evaporator coil. This part is responsible for absorbing the heat from the air inside your home. Evaporator coils remove the heat using a refrigerant that runs through copper tubing. Thus, providing your system with the ability to circulate cool air throughout your home. The evaporator coil also helps remove moisture that is in the air within your home. The moisture is condensed into water on the coils and collected into the drain pan.

Air Filter – One of the most important parts of any HVAC system is the air filter. The air filter stops any mold, bacteria, dust and any other smaller particles that may enter through your system. It is highly recommended that your air filter be changed about once every 3 months.

Air Handlers can last anywhere from 10-15 years depending on the usage and brand. Many large brands have a 10 year warranty included, but you should speak with a professional to discuss your options. Paying close attention to details such as your warranty can save you loads of money when it comes to repair time. Afterall, spending a few thousand dollars on a proper Air Handler should come with all the warranty bells and whistles. Over the years, research is also consistently being done to provide a more energy friendly system.
